Wooden Garden Benches

Wooden garden benches have become an essential accessory for any type of garden to have. They come in a wide variety of wood such as bamboo, sheesam, oak, pine and teak. Regardless of the wood type used for the garden bench, if it was made using tropical wood such as mahogany and teak, you would need to ask if the wood was plantation grown. This would be because wood, which was harvested from the endangered rain forests, could cause significant environmental impact because of its usage. The plantation-grown woods are specifically raised to be used in the manufacturing of furniture, and therefore they do not cause much environmental impact. There are also heirloom benches, which are available, and are commonly sold with different finishes, designs, shapes and colors. The primary difference would be the shape of the arms, back and legs.

Basically, there are two kinds of wooden garden benches that you could purchase – those benches that do not have backs and those that do. Regardless of the type of wooden garden bench that you would be deciding to buy, you would have to make sure that you would be checking out its construction prior to purchasing it. This is so that you would be able to assess if the bench you will be buying will be sturdy enough to last for a long time. There is the rule that the fewer bolts and screws used for its construction, the more durable it will be. Rather than bolts and screws, the bench should have been made with mortise and tenon joinery. You would also need to study the wood that was used. Be careful when buying one which has been made from pine – they might not be able to last very long outdoors. Probably the better choices for the wood to be used for garden benches would be cedar, cypress, redwood, and teak, which is the best but the most expensive choice.

Most people consider park benches and garden benches to be the same thing, but true garden benches are usually more decorative and made for the homeowner instead of a commercial park setting.
